THE SPACE BETWEEN

ARCHITECTURAL ISSUE: The Stop.

ARCHITECTURAL CONVENTION: Monumental Architecture.

ARCHITECTURAL CHALLENGE: Articulating figure and ground in 3 dimensions.

THE ARTISTS:

· Teodoro González de León

“The number one goal of architecture is to create useful objects. We create useful objects for the city to experience them - but also so that those objects move us.”

The STOP is created as part of the public transport system, but it also plays a big part as a monumental architecture. A stop in some way is a representation of this area or community. Residents and visitors meet and move off to places. It is a connection point for the circulation. In my design, the stop is quite open with a pedestrian bridge across Anzac Parade. It provides shelter and allows natural daylight to the platform at the same time. People moving through or waiting at the stop experience similar spatial qualities and transit through to other destinations. University is a place to teach and inspire, the open design with some level constraints also resemble the essence behind.

· David Adjaye

“His ideas are about light, airy spaces that were infused with a sense of vibrancy and were designed to draw the community in.”

The final design of the structure is inspired by this concept of David Adjaye. “Light” and “Airy” spaces are what I tried to create along the progress of this experiment. This light rail stop is designed for an area which holds a large circulation of commuters, mostly students. By approaching it from the purpose of “drawing the people in” the entrance to stop from the Kensington campus side is constructed to be bigger and more open. This functional purpose of this idea is to lessen the burden at university rush hours. The center panel/cover is situated facing north this way it allows more natural lighting.

The experiment started creating amalgamations of rectangular prisms inspired by concepts of the artists.

The second stage is the development of combined configurations and curvilinear structures.
